Optimization of Cogeneration Power-Desalination Plants

The design of new dual-purpose thermal desalination plants is a combinatory problem because the optimal process configuration strongly depends on desired targets electricity and freshwater. This paper proposes mathematical model for selecting structure, operating conditions, sizes all system components plants. Electricity supposed to be generated by combined-cycle heat power plant (CCHPP) with following candidate structures: (a) one or two gas turbines; (b) additional burners in recovery steam generator; (c) presence missing medium-pressure turbine; (d) generation reheating at low pressure. Freshwater obtained from processes: (e) multi-effect distillation (MED) multi-stage flash (MSF) system. number effects MED stages MSF are also discrete decisions. Different case studies presented show applicability same cost data. proposed powerful tool optimizing (or under modernization) and/or improving existing freshwater production. No articles addressing optimization involving decisions mentioned above found literature.
